    Garden Cake Kitchen

    A new (and very much welcome) addition to the local food scene here in Taranaki, Garden Cake Kitchen offers a menu of classics, as well as unique flavour combinations, all using seasonal local ingredients. We recently chatted to owner Rose to find out more about this delicious new venture.

     

    Tell us a little about yourself.

    I am originally from Taranaki, but left for uni and 20 years later I’m home!  I moved back from France last year with my husband Luc and our 2 boys, Rémi and Florian.  I was a hospital Physiotherapist prior to starting Garden, mainly at Middlemore in Auckland.

     

    What led you to create Garden Cake Kitchen?

    I’ve always loved baking cakes and making food for people, it’s just something that brings me joy.  Living in France was very inspiring for me in terms of playing around with all the different produce and flavours – it really has such an edge of romance and I love bringing a little sprinkle of that romance into my cakes.  It was during our year of lockdown, in our tiny apartment kitchen, that I began to dream up a little business to start on our return home.  A lot of cakes were baked. A lot of cakes were eaten.

     

    Tell us about your baking ethos.

    I love the idea that my cakes create several moments of joy for people; how they feel when they hear or read the flavour combination, the first time they open the box and see the cake, and most importantly that first bite.  It has to taste delicious!  More delicious than it looks.

    I’m working to be as sustainable as possible, building relationships with local producers and suppliers.  Through Venture Taranaki and the Sustainable Business Network, I’m currently involved in an Emissions Reduction Scheme, learning heaps and trying to create good habits from the start.

     

    What do you enjoy and / or appreciate most about your community?

    As a new business, I’ve found the small business community here so supportive already, it’s been awesome and I’m very grateful.  Taranaki has such a wealth of great food producers and the food scene has such a cool vibe to it at the moment.  I love seeing everyone collaborating with each other and am really looking forward to being involved in that.  Also, how beautiful is this place?  We are loving living here.

     

    Finally, how do you drink your West Coast Cocoa?

    To drink: hands down the Mayan Chilli, next to a roaring fire.  Grown ups hot chocolate.  Divine.

    To bake with: the Dutched baking cocoa.  Amazing.  Elevates a dark chocolate cake like nothing else.
